What is the main Vienna synagogue?

The main Vienna synagogue is the Stadttempel, located in the city center. It is the only synagogue in Vienna that survived Kristallnacht in 1938.

Important: The Stadttempel is currently closed for renovation until autumn 2026, and there are no interior synagogue tours available at this time.

History of the Vienna Synagogue

Before World War II, Vienna had more than 90 synagogues and Jewish prayer houses. During the Nazi era, nearly all were destroyed in 1938 during Kristallnacht.

The Vienna synagogue known as the Stadttempel survived because it was built within a residential block, making it impossible to destroy without damaging surrounding buildings.

Today, it remains the central synagogue of Vienna and one of the most important Jewish landmarks in Austria.

Can You Visit a Vienna Synagogue?

Under normal circumstances, visiting the Vienna synagogue requires booking a guided tour through the Jewish Community of Vienna.

However, due to restoration work, the Stadttempel is currently closed and cannot be visited inside.

👉 Even without interior access, the Vienna synagogue area and Jewish quarter remain essential parts of any meaningful visit.
