Historically it has never been made easy for the jewish community to establish in Vienna due to restrictions and intolerance overall. Nevertheless the „third community“ was also the third largest in Europe after 1900. At this time the Jewish population played a major role in the modern art movement, for which Vienna is famous and popular today.
In the night from the 9th-10th November 1938, today 84 years ago, Vienna left the city to be taken over by a violent nazi mob, plundering, burning and destroying the Jewish heritage of the capital. Many people were killed in that night. There is only one temple left, which kept untouched out of 26. The rest was completely demolished. Everyone does know what happened in the following years after 1938.
1826 the Vienna City Temple opened, located in the „Seitenstettengasse 4“, one of the oldest parts of town. The architect Josef Kornhäusel designed the synangogue in a way it integrated its shape perfectly into a residential building. This was done to a point you would not even recognize the place as a synagogue (back then), which at the same time is the only reason why it had survived the „Novemberprognom“
Since the establishment in the mid 19th century until this day it has been operating as the headquarter of the Jewish Community in Vienna.
